Moving Outside
In a big landscape I feel small, and that's where the perspective comes from. I like being humbled. It's the same curiosity I bring to art or science: staying aware of how insignificant I am.
There's always a choice in the relationship you create with an environment, in how you choose to move through it. In climbing, you can approach your surroundings with an intent to conquer. I don't like that. I like to climb to decipher, to learn what the rock is asking of me. Being humbled, and shown I still have so much to learn, is what I enjoy most. The more attunement and openness I bring, the better I can read the rock.
Running is different. I let my thoughts run alongside me instead of leading. I feel bare, running under Squamish trees that have been here far longer than I have. That's the perspective I try to bring back into the studio.
